Dio was an American heavy metal band formed in 1982 by vocalist Ronnie James Dio shortly after he departed Black Sabbath. Their 1983 debut, Holy Diver, became an instant classic. The Last in Line (1984) consolidated the band's success, followed by Sacred Heart (1985) and Dream Evil (1987) with new guitarist Craig Goldy. After a hiatus, Lock Up the Wolves (1990) featured an entirely new lineup. Through the 1990s the band evolved with Strange Highways (1993) and Angry Machines (1996). Magica (2000), Killing the Dragon (2002), and Master of the Moon (2004) followed. Ronnie James Dio remained the band's sole constant member. He died of stomach cancer on May 16, 2010, at age 67, ending one of heavy metal's most influential careers.
