Accept is a German heavy metal band formed in 1976 in Solingen, North Rhine-Westphalia, by guitarist Wolf Hoffmann, vocalist Udo Dirkschneider, and bassist Peter Baltes, alongside guitarist Jörg Fischer and drummer Frank Friedrich. After an early lineup shuffle that brought in drummer Stefan Kaufmann, the band released its self-titled debut in 1979 on Brain Records, followed by I'm a Rebel (1980), a more commercial detour the band soon abandoned. With Breaker (1981) and Restless and Wild (1982), Accept forged the aggressive, twin-guitar-driven sound that would define the New Wave of German Heavy Metal, pairing Hoffmann's precise, classically influenced riffing with Dirkschneider's raspy, gravel-throated bark. The band reached its commercial and artistic peak with Balls to the Wall (1983), whose galloping title track became a genre-defining anthem, and Metal Heart (1985), which further expanded their international audience, particularly in the United States. Dirkschneider departed in 1987 to pursue his solo project U.D.O., and Accept regrouped with American singer David Reece for the glam-tinged Eat the Heat (1989), a stylistic departure that alienated much of the band's core fanbase. Dirkschneider rejoined for Objection Overruled (1993), Death Row (1994), and Predator (1996), before the band dissolved in 1997. A brief 2005 reunion produced no lasting activity, and Accept remained dormant until 2009, when Wolf Hoffmann rebuilt the band around new American vocalist Mark Tornillo, formerly of TT Quick, whose powerful voice echoed Dirkschneider's intensity while giving the band a fresh identity. This lineup launched a celebrated second career, beginning with Blood of the Nations (2010) and continuing through Stalingrad (2012), Blind Rage (2014), The Rise of Chaos (2017), Too Mean to Die (2021), and Humanoid (2024) — all produced or co-produced by Andy Sneap and released to strong critical acclaim, with several charting in Germany's top ten. Across seventeen studio albums, Accept has become one of heavy metal's most influential and enduring acts. Wolf Hoffmann remains the band's sole constant member and primary creative force, and today, with Tornillo on vocals, Accept continues to tour internationally and record, standing as a respected elder statesman of heavy metal.
