Alex Landenburg — born in Germany in 1979 — has been Kamelot's drummer since 2019, and is one of the most sought-after players in European metal. His path is that of a specialist called by bands needing precision in complex repertoire: he has passed through Rhapsody of Fire, Mekong Delta — the German technical thrash band with structures drawn from classical music — and Annihilator, besides projects tied to Tobias Sammet. Few drummers move between such distinct genres without sounding out of place. In Kamelot he took the chair of Casey Grillo, who had held the position for more than two decades. The repertoire demands moving between heavy mid tempos, orchestral sections and passages of speed, always beneath layers of orchestra and choir occupying much of the spectrum — the drums have to mark the structure without burying the symphonic arrangements. He recorded The Awakening (2023) and is part of the current line-up, a period in which Kamelot had already consolidated its rebuilding around Tommy Karevik and returned to main stages on the European festival circuit.
