Symphonic Metal · Power · since 1987

Kamelot is an American symphonic power metal band formed in Tampa, Florida, in 1987 by guitarist and principal songwriter Thomas Youngblood, the group's only constant member. They debuted with Eternity (1995) and Dominion (1997) with original vocalist Mark Vanderbilt. The turning point was the arrival of Norwegian singer Roy Khan, who debuted on Siege Perilous (1998). Khan's dark, operatic baritone and his songwriting partnership with Youngblood transformed Kamelot into something more cinematic and literate than most of their peers. The Fourth Legacy (1999) established the template and Karma (2001) broke the band internationally. The Khan era peaked with the two-part rock opera Epica (2003) and The Black Halo (2005), loosely based on Goethe's Faust; The Black Halo is widely regarded as the band's masterpiece. Khan formally left in April 2011. Tommy Karevik was announced as his successor in June 2012, debuting on Silverthorn (2012). Haven (2015), The Shadow Theory (2018) and The Awakening (2023) refined a heavier, more modern sound. Their fourteenth album, Dark Asylum, is set for release in August 2026.
