Anders Zackrisson

Anders Zackrisson — Nocturnal Rites' vocalist between 1993 and 2000 — was the voice that pulled the band out of death metal. Until his arrival, the singer was founding guitarist Fredrik Mannberg, and the group played death metal. Zackrisson came in as a dedicated vocalist and brought clean singing in a high register — a change that repositioned Nocturnal Rites entirely, from death metal to Swedish melodic power metal. He recorded three albums: In a Time of Blood and Fire (1995), Tales of Mystery and Imagination (1997) and The Sacred Talisman (1999). These are the records that established the band on the European power metal circuit of the 1990s, with fantasy subject matter and structures inherited from melodic heavy metal. He left in 2000, and the band took another direction with Jonny Lindqvist — a lower voice, more direct lyrics, a heavier sound. The Zackrisson phase remains a stylistically distinct chapter in the group's discography, and not an early version of what came later.
