Casey Grillo — born in the United States in 1976 — is the drummer who took over the role in Queensrÿche following Scott Rockenfield's withdrawal, and comes from two decades in Kamelot. He was the drummer of that American symphonic power metal band between 1997 and 2018, a period in which the group established itself as one of the genre's most recognised names in Europe. It is a repertoire of a different demand: high tempos carried by continuous double kick, over arrangements with orchestral layers. In Queensrÿche the demand is another. The tracks do not work through speed but through dynamics: changes of tempo, alternation between tension and almost acoustic passages, and transitions that must sustain the narrative continuity of the concept albums. The drums here signal structure rather than drive. Moving from one format to the other requires considerable adjustment, and that is what his arrival represents in a band that was going through yet another change of line-up.
