Chris Adler — born in the United States in 1972 — is Lamb of God's founding drummer, and one of the most influential players in American metal of the 2000s. His approach defined what was expected of a metal drummer in that period. Adler combines fast double kick with a rhythmic writing that favours displacement and syncopation over constant pulse — he works with Mark Morton's riff, not beneath it, and it is that interaction that gives Lamb of God the groove distinguishing it from merely fast bands. He recorded from New American Gospel (2000) to VII: Sturm und Drang (2015), including Ashes of the Wake (2004), Sacrament (2006) and Wrath (2009) — records that took a band with no clean singing into the American charts and projected the so-called new wave of American heavy metal. In 2015 he was invited by Megadeth to record Dystopia (2016), an album that earned the band a Grammy. Holding the position in two first-rank bands at once is rare, and the spell ultimately led to his departure from Lamb of God in 2019, replaced by Art Cruz. He is the brother of Willie Adler, the band's guitarist since 1999.
