Claude Schnell

Claude Schnell was Dio's keyboardist between 1983 and 1989, a period covering the band's most prominent phase. Born in 1955, he joined during the Holy Diver tour and recorded The Last in Line (1984), Sacred Heart (1985) and Dream Evil (1987). His function was discreet and structural. Dio was never a band with keyboards in the foreground, but the material of that period depends on background layers that widen the sonic space without competing with the voice — the atmospheric intros, the sustained chords beneath the choruses and the textures that give Sacred Heart its almost cinematic scale. It is work you notice by its absence: take it away and the repertoire would sound smaller. He left the band in 1989, at the end of that cycle, when Dio reshaped the line-up entirely.
