Daniel Erlandsson — born in Sweden in 1976 — is Arch Enemy's drummer: he was in the 1996 line-up and returned in 1998, remaining ever since. That is almost thirty years in the band, making him the longest-serving member alongside founder Michael Amott. He has crossed three singers — Johan Liiva, Angela Gossow and Alissa White-Gluz — and recorded practically the entire discography, from Stigmata (1998) to Blood Dynasty (2025). His contribution is technical and structural. Arch Enemy's melodic death metal combines blast beats and double kick at high speed with mid-tempo sections and guitar harmonies in thirds — the drums have to move between those regimes while keeping the pulse and without covering the melodic lines that are the band's mark. It is a more articulated approach than that of traditional death metal, where constant speed suffices. He belongs to the same generation of Swedish drummers formed in the Gothenburg scene, which defined the genre's vocabulary in the 1990s and exported it to the world.
