Arch Enemy

Arch Enemy is a Swedish melodic death metal band formed in Halmstad in 1995 by guitarist Michael Amott, alongside vocalist Johan Liiva. Their ferocious debut, Black Earth (1996), established their signature blend of twin-guitar melody and death metal aggression. Stigmata (1998) became their first release to reach a worldwide audience, followed by Burning Bridges (1999). In 2000, Liiva was replaced by German vocalist Angela Gossow, whose visceral growls transformed Arch Enemy into one of extreme metal's most influential acts and made her one of the genre's first prominent female frontwomen. The Gossow era produced Wages of Sin (2001), Anthems of Rebellion (2003), Doomsday Machine (2005), Rise of the Tyrant (2007), The Root of All Evil (2009), and Khaos Legions (2011). In March 2014, Gossow stepped back from touring to focus on family life, transitioning into a management role. She was succeeded by Canadian vocalist Alissa White-Gluz, formerly of The Agonist, who fronted the band for over a decade on War Eternal (2014), Will to Power (2017), Deceivers (2022), and Blood Dynasty (2025). Founding members Michael Amott, Daniel Erlandsson, and Sharlee D'Angelo have remained the band's core throughout. White-Gluz departed in late 2025, and American vocalist Lauren Hart was announced as the new frontwoman in February 2026. Now three decades into its career, Arch Enemy remains one of melodic death metal's most enduring and commercially successful bands.
