Daniel Svensson — born in Sweden in 1977 — was In Flames's drummer between 1998 and 2015, a period covering the band's phase of greatest international reach. He joined replacing Björn Gelotte, who moved to guitar, and debuted on Colony (1999). He also recorded Clayman (2000), Reroute to Remain (2002), Soundtrack to Your Escape (2004), Come Clarity (2006) and the output that followed — that is, both the albums that consolidated melodic death metal and those in which the band moved away from it. That transition defines his function. On the early records the drums must hold constant speed beneath harmonised guitars; from Reroute to Remain onwards the repertoire took in alternative rock structures, mid tempos and a more open dynamic, demanding restraint where drive had been required before. Few drummers cross so wide a change of language while keeping the same band recognisable. He left the group in 2015 for personal reasons, ending seventeen years of continuous activity.
