In Flames are a Swedish melodic death metal band formed in Gothenburg in 1990 by guitarist Jesper Strömblad. The debut Lunar Strain arrived in 1994. Alongside At the Gates and Dark Tranquillity, In Flames became one of the three foundational acts of the Gothenburg sound: twin harmonized guitar leads drawn from the NWOBHM welded to the aggression and harsh vocals of death metal. That formula, refined across The Jester Race (1996), Whoracle (1997), and Colony (1999), proved enormously influential. Anders Fridén joined in 1995; with Björn Gelotte he has been the band's constant presence since. Clayman (2000) is the culminating statement of the classic era. Beginning with Reroute to Remain (2002), In Flames moved steadily toward alternative metal, bringing their first Billboard 200 placements and a far larger audience, while dividing the melodic death purist base. Strömblad left in 2010. Foregone (2023) was received as a genuine return to form. In Flames remain one of metal's most durable and widely imitated acts.
