Eric Adams — Louis Marullo, born in the United States in 1952 — has been Manowar's singer since the band was founded in 1980, and possesses one of the widest ranges in heavy metal. His register is that of a tenor with unusual power: he sustains high notes for long stretches, climbs to heights most singers in the genre cannot reach and keeps, even at the extreme, a clean and projected timbre. It is opera-derived singing applied to a repertoire about battles and mythology, and that combination is precisely what gives Manowar its epic dimension — without a voice of that size, the lyrics would sound ridiculous. That technical demand has been sustained for over four decades, rare in any vocal register and almost unheard of in one so high. Adams is on every album the band has made, from Battle Hymns (1982) onwards, without a single interruption. He is also the discreet counterpoint to the group's public persona: offstage he keeps a private life and rarely takes part in the grandiloquent declarations that define Manowar's image.
