Falk Maria Schlegel

Falk Maria Schlegel — born in Germany in 1975 — has been Powerwolf's keyboard player and organist since 2004, and is responsible for the element that distinguishes the band from any other in the genre. His instrument is not power metal's usual symphonic keyboard imitating strings and orchestra: it is the church pipe organ. That choice defines the whole of Powerwolf — the band builds its tracks on liturgical timbre, Gregorian choirs and hymnal harmonic progressions, with lyrics that invert religious vocabulary. Without the organ, the concept would not hold. Live, his function is also theatrical. Schlegel plays atop a pulpit, in priestly costume, leading the audience as if leading a congregation — part of a staging the band takes seriously enough to make its shows one of the most recognisable acts on the European festival circuit. He is on the whole discography, from Return in Bloodred (2005) to Wake Up the Wicked (2024), part of the four-musician core that has remained intact since the founding.
