Powerwolf

Powerwolf are a German power metal band formed in Saarbrücken in 2003-2004 by brothers Matthew Greywolf (lead guitar) and Charles Greywolf (bass and rhythm guitar), who had previously played together in the stoner rock outfit Red Aim. Seeking a singer with genuine operatic weight, the brothers encountered Attila Dorn — born Karsten Brill, a classically trained vocalist schooled in opera — and recruited him as frontman. Keyboardist Falk Maria Schlegel completed the founding sound, with drummer Roel van Helden joining in 2011 to settle the lineup that endures today. From the outset the band adopted stage pseudonyms and an elaborate mythology, treating Powerwolf less as a group of musicians than as a cast of characters. That theatricality defines them. Powerwolf built their identity on werewolf folklore, vampire legend and Gothic religious horror — corpse paint, clerical robes, Latin choral chants and lyrics steeped in the imagery of sin, sacrament and damnation. It is horror as pageantry rather than blasphemy: the band describes its concerts as a "heavy metal mass", complete with pyrotechnics, sermon-like audience call-and-response and a new visual concept for each album cycle. Musically, the signature element is Schlegel's church organ, which sits at the centre of the arrangements and gives the band its cathedral-sized, hymnal quality. Layered gang choirs, galloping twin guitars and deliberately simple, roaring choruses make the songs function as communal anthems designed for arenas and festival fields. Their commercial ascent was steady and then explosive. The debut Return in Bloodred (2005) and Lupus Dei (2007) established the formula on Metal Blade Records, while Bible of the Beast (2009) delivered their first German chart entry. Blood of the Saints (2011) broke them internationally, and after signing to Napalm Records, Preachers of the Night (2013) debuted at number one in Germany. Blessed & Possessed (2015) and the Metal Hammer award-winning The Sacrament of Sin (2018) consolidated their standing, followed by Call of the Wild (2021), the collaboration-heavy Interludium (2023) and Wake Up the Wicked (2024). Powerwolf now rank among Europe's biggest power metal live draws, headlining Wacken Open Air and major festivals across the continent and touring Latin America and North America. Their combination of ritual spectacle, singalong simplicity and relentless visual consistency has given them a devoted, costume-wearing fanbase, and they remain in a career-peak phase, touring the Wake Up the Wicked cycle into 2026.
