Fredrik Andersson — born in Sweden in 1975 — was Amon Amarth's drummer between 1998 and 2015, a period covering practically the band's entire international rise. He recorded from Once Sent from the Golden Hall (1998) to Deceiver of the Gods (2013), including Versus the World (2002), With Oden on Our Side (2006), Twilight of the Thunder God (2008) and Surtur Rising (2011) — the run that took the group from the Swedish underground circuit to the main stages of the largest European festivals. His function is defined by a choice the band made: Amon Amarth does not play at extreme speed. While most death metal works with blast beats and continuous double kick, the group prefers mid tempos, with firm marking and space between strokes. That is what allows the guitar melodies to be audible and the songs to sound epic rather than chaotic. Playing that way is more exposed than it seems: with no speed to cover, every stroke has to fall exactly where it should. Andersson held that format for seventeen years, defining the band's characteristic weight.
