Amon Amarth

Amon Amarth is a Swedish melodic death metal band formed in 1992 in Tumba, a suburb south of Stockholm. The group grew out of the grindcore band Scum, with founding members Johan Hegg (vocals), Olavi Mikkonen (lead guitar), and Ted Lundström (bass) forming the new project. They took their name from the Sindarin name for Mount Doom in Tolkien's Middle-earth, though their creative core lies in Old Norse history and mythology rather than fantasy fiction. From their debut album, Once Sent from the Golden Hall (1998), Amon Amarth built their identity around Viking-age warfare, seafaring conquest, and the Norse pantheon. While often labeled "Viking metal," the band insists they play death metal. Following their debut, the band released a steady string of albums — The Avenger (1999), The Crusher (2001), Versus the World (2002), and Fate of Norns (2004) — before their commercial breakthrough, Twilight of the Thunder God (2008). Subsequent releases, including Surtur Rising (2011), Deceiver of the Gods (2013), Jomsviking (2016), Berserker (2019), and The Great Heathen Army (2022), cemented Amon Amarth as one of extreme metal's biggest live draws. Today the band remains one of the most commercially successful and internationally recognized melodic death metal bands in the world, known for elaborate Viking-themed stage shows, with a thirteenth studio album, The All-Father Awakens, slated for October 2026.
