Jeff Plate has been Savatage's drummer since 1994, having joined in the hardest period of the band's history: just after Criss Oliva's death, when the group had to decide whether it would go on existing at all. Born in the United States in 1962, he recorded Dead Winter Dead (1995), The Wake of Magellan (1997) and Poets and Madmen (2001) — the albums on which Savatage took its conception of rock opera to its most elaborate form, with continuous narratives and orchestral arrangements. His function in that repertoire is less about marking time than about dramaturgy: the tracks change tempo, dynamics and character several times, and it falls to the drums to signal those transitions without breaking the continuity. It is structural reading before it is technique. He has also been Trans-Siberian Orchestra's drummer since its creation, and passed through Metal Church in another period. He remains in Savatage in the reunion begun in 2023.
