Joacim Cans — born in Sweden in 1970 — has been HammerFall's singer since 1996, present across the band's entire discography. His voice is what makes the project viable. HammerFall set out to recover traditional heavy metal at a time when the genre was considered outdated, and that format depends entirely on singing: broad choruses, melodies the audience memorises on first hearing, a clean and projected register. Without a singer able to sustain that, the band's direct riffs would sound simplistic rather than effective. Cans sings with a clear tone and a mid-to-high range, without resorting to technical extremes. That restraint is deliberate and suited to the repertoire — the aim is not to impress but to let thousands of people sing along. He is, with Oscar Dronjak, the only member present throughout the band's history since 1996, and the one who led the group through successive changes in the rhythm section and on guitars. He also works on his own projects and as a singing teacher, an activity rare among singers of the genre.
