Jocke Wallgren has been Amon Amarth's drummer since 2016, having replaced Fredrik Andersson after seventeen years of a stable line-up. He joined to record Berserker (2019) and The Great Heathen Army (2022), and to carry the band through its phase of widest international reach — the period in which Amon Amarth began headlining the main European festivals with elaborately staged shows, including replica Viking ships onstage. His function inherits a specific choice of the group's. Amon Amarth plays at mid tempo, not at extreme speed, and that leaves the drums exposed: with no blast beats to cover, every stroke is audible and has to fall exactly where it should. The weight comes from precision, not from quickness. At the same time, the more recent repertoire has taken in high-speed passages and greater dynamic variation, which requires the drummer to move between the two registers without altering the band's recognisable character. He came from the Swedish extreme metal scene, having worked in other groups before taking the position.
