Johan Nunez — Colombian-Belgian drummer — has been part of Firewind since 2011, the band's longest-serving in that position. His origin is unusual in European metal: born in Colombia and based in Belgium, he reached the genre's circuit by a route that does not pass through the traditional axes — Germany, Scandinavia, the United Kingdom. Besides Firewind, he has spells in other bands of the international circuit, including Nightrage, the Swedish melodic death metal group. His more than ten years cover Few Against Many (2012), Immortals (2017), Firewind (2020) and Stand United (2024), a period including the band's return to full activity after Gus G. ended his work with Ozzy Osbourne. The role demands sustained speed with melodic room: Firewind plays at fast tempo, but its foreground is occupied by alternating keyboard and guitar solos in neoclassical vocabulary. The drums have to hold the base without covering those layers — a different problem from the one posed in bands where percussion is the dominant element.
