John Maurice Archambault

John Arch — American vocalist — was Fates Warning's first singer and one of progressive metal's founding influences. He was on the band's first three records, between 1984 and 1986, in the phase when Fates Warning still worked close to traditional heavy metal but already with irregular structures and lyrics of an abstract cast. His way of singing is what most distinguishes those albums: long melodic lines that do not fit square metre, phrasing that runs across the bars, and a high, tense timbre that rarely seeks comfort. He left the group in 1987 and spent nearly two decades without recording — a personal decision, not a forced interruption. He returned in the 2000s in occasional projects, including work alongside musicians from Fates Warning itself. It is an uncommon case of influence disproportionate to the volume of work. Three records, made in three years, shaped the vocal vocabulary of an entire subgenre — and are still cited by progressive metal singers forty years later.
