Justin Foley — born in the United States in 1976 — has been Killswitch Engage's drummer since 2003, the longest-serving in that position. His entry coincides with The End of Heartache (2004), the record that took the band into the American mainstream and earned a Grammy nomination. Since then he has recorded the group's entire output: As Daylight Dies (2006), Killswitch Engage (2009), Disarm the Descent (2013), Incarnate (2016), Atonement (2019) and This Consequence (2025). His function in metalcore is more complex than speed suggests. The genre constantly alternates between sections: heavy syncopated riff, breakdown at reduced tempo, open melodic chorus. Each demands a different rhythmic approach, and the drums are what mark those transitions — if they are not articulated with precision, the track sounds like a collage of disconnected parts. Foley has steered that architecture for more than twenty years. He came from Blood Has Been Shed, a band from the same Massachusetts and Connecticut circuit that also produced Howard Jones, with whom he played before both reached Killswitch Engage.
