Killswitch Engage is an American metalcore band formed in 1999 in Westfield, Massachusetts, assembled from the remains of Overcast and Aftershock. Their self-titled debut arrived in 2000, but 2002's Alive or Just Breathing made them foundational figures in the New Wave of American Heavy Metal, fusing Swedish melodic death riffing with hardcore aggression and soaring clean choruses. Jesse Leach left in 2002 and was replaced by Howard Jones. The Jones era delivered the commercial breakthrough: The End of Heartache (2004) went gold and earned a Grammy nomination, while As Daylight Dies (2006) produced "My Curse." Jones departed in 2012 and Leach returned, producing Disarm the Descent (2013). Adam Dutkiewicz has been the band's defining creative engine, serving as lead guitarist and producer on nearly every album. Incarnate (2016) hit number six, Atonement (2019) featured guest appearances, and This Consequence (2025) delivered their heaviest album yet. More than 25 years in, Killswitch Engage remain both elder statesmen and active headliners.
