Marcos Medina

Brazil

Marcos Medina — Brazilian keyboardist — is part of Soulspell, the metal opera conceived by drummer and composer Heleno Vale. In a metal opera the keyboard has a dramaturgical function beyond the musical one. It creates the settings in which the narrative unfolds, marks the transitions between scenes and sustains the passages where the text advances without singing — devices inherited directly from incidental music for theatre and cinema, which Avantasia and Ayreon established within European metal. Soulspell applies that format to stories of its own, spread across five acts over nearly two decades: A Legacy of Honor (2008), The Labyrinth of Truths (2010), Hollow's Gathering (2012), The Second Big Bang (2017) and Act V — Spirits of Ghosts (2025). Each record gathers a different vocal cast, Brazilian and international. What holds the sonic unity of that succession of guests together is precisely the fixed instrumental core — and within it, the keyboard is the element that most defines each act's atmosphere.
