Soulspell

Soulspell is a Brazilian metal opera conceived in 2004 by drummer and composer Heleno Vale, along the lines of projects such as Tobias Sammet's Avantasia and Arjen Lucassen's Ayreon. The central idea is the same: instead of a band with a fixed line-up, each album is a narrative work in which a rotating cast of guest vocalists plays characters in a continuing story. The first chapter, A Legacy of Honor, appeared in 2008 and already displayed the project's scale, gathering dozens of Brazilian and foreign singers. The Labyrinth of Truths followed in 2010 and Hollow's Gathering in 2012, consolidating the series as the most ambitious example of the metal opera format produced in Brazil. The Second Big Bang arrived in 2017 and Act V — Spirits of Ghosts in 2025, keeping the project alive for more than two decades. Musically, Soulspell works in symphonic and progressive power metal territory, with broad keyboard arrangements, melodic guitars and orchestral passages — always in service of the narrative. The rotating cast is part of the design: each voice corresponds to a role, and the variety of timbres is what gives the story its relief. Beyond the studio guests, the project maintains a stable core and a live performance team, with names such as Daísa Munhoz, Daniel Guirado, Tito Falaschi, Leandro Erba, Sergio Pusep, Pedro Campos, Talita Quintano and Victor Emeka, alongside the line-up built around Heleno Vale, Kleber Ramalho, Airton Araújo and Marcos Medina. Five acts in a little under twenty years make Soulspell one of the most persistent conceptual projects in Brazilian heavy music, and a rare case of a national metal opera that managed to assemble an international cast without depending on the structure of a major European label.
