Matt Nicholls — British drummer — is a co-founder of Bring Me the Horizon and has been in the band since its formation in Sheffield. His continuity spans the most complete transformation ever undertaken by a heavy rock group. Nicholls recorded blast beats and continuous double kick on Count Your Blessings (2006), a raw deathcore record, and twenty years later plays stadiums with a repertoire in which the drums share space with electronic programming and often support pop song structures. These are opposite demands. In deathcore the drums are the engine: constant speed, maximum density, no silence. On the later records — Sempiternal (2013), That's the Spirit (2015), amo (2019) — the work became one of precision within an exact rhythmic grid, with deliberate space between the strokes and the discipline of not filling. Few drummers cover that distance within the same band. With Lee Malia and Oliver Sykes, Nicholls is one of the elements ensuring Bring Me the Horizon still sounds like a band, however far the production moves from the band format.
