Mike Cortada — American drummer — was part of Ice Nine Kills in the original line-up, assembled in Boston in the early 2000s. He belongs to the phase when the band was still looking for what it would be. Ice Nine Kills started far from the conceptual, theatrical metalcore that would make it known, and took several records to find its shape — Last Chance to Make Amends (2006) and Safe Is Just a Shadow (2010) document a local-circuit group, without the literary and cinematic concepts that would define its mature phase. These are years of small shows in Massachusetts, recordings with limited means and a restricted audience. The distance between that starting point and the Ice Nine Kills that would enter the American charts with The Silver Scream (2018), staging each track with sets and costumes, is one of the greatest a metal band has covered in two decades. Cortada is part of the core that sustained the group before any sign that such a crossing would be possible.
