Mike Terrana — born in the United States in 1960 — is one of the most sought-after drummers in European metal, part of Vision Divine during the 9 Degrees West of the Moon (2009) phase. His path is that of a specialist called in when the repertoire demands more than precision: he has passed through Yngwie Malmsteen, Rage, Axel Rudi Pell, Masterplan and Tarja Turunen's solo band, besides recording with Metalium and Beto Vázquez Infinity. Few drummers in the genre accumulate so many first-rank bands without settling in any of them. His style combines jazz and big band training with metal power — heard in the rhythmic displacements, the wide use of cymbals, and drum solos built as musical pieces rather than displays of speed. That background explains why he appears in bands as different in purpose as Malmsteen's neoclassical power metal and Turunen's symphonic metal. He is also an American whose career took place almost entirely in Europe, where melodic metal kept a market and a touring circuit that the United States did not offer.
