Metalium are a German power metal band formed in Hamburg in 1998 by bassist Lars Ratz, vocalist Henning Basse and guitarist Matthias Lange. Ratz was the bandleader and the conceptual engine of the group — the idea that gives the whole discography its unity is his: every album is a "chapter" of one continuous narrative, and every title carries that numbering. The original line-up also featured American drummer Mike Terrana, a veteran of work with Yngwie Malmsteen and Rage, whose powerful style helped establish the band's characteristic heaviness from the start. Millennium Metal — Chapter One appeared in 1999 and laid out the formula: classic German-style heavy metal, direct riffing, stadium-sized choruses and Basse's high, piercing voice. State of Triumph — Chapter Two (2000) and Hero Nation — Chapter Three (2002) established the band on the European power metal circuit, with a solid festival presence and a reputation for a rawer, less symphonic sound than contemporaries such as Rhapsody or Freedom Call. As Time Ends — Chapter Four arrived in 2004, followed by Demons of Insanity — Chapter Five (2005), Nothing to Undo — Chapter Six (2007) and Incubus — Chapter Seven (2008), completing seven chapters in just under a decade. Basse left the group in 2008 and the band went through vocalist changes before going on hiatus. The discography totals eight albums, all named according to the chapter scheme that became Metalium's trademark — a consistency of concept rare even within a genre fond of themed records. On 18 April 2021, Lars Ratz died in the crash of an ultralight aircraft in Mallorca, Spain. Losing the founder might have closed the story for good, but in 2023 Henning Basse and Matthias Lange reactivated Metalium, taking up the name and the repertoire again to keep alive the body of work built around Ratz's original idea. Metalium never reached the commercial reach of German power metal's biggest names, but they hold a solid place in the genre's memory: a band with a cohesive identity, an instantly recognisable singer, a first-rate drummer in their early years, and a narrative project carried through to the end, chapter by chapter.
