Miro

Miro — born in Germany in 1968, given name Michael Rodenberg — is a keyboard player, arranger and producer, and has been part of Avantasia's core since 2007. His function in European melodic metal is that of orchestrator. When a symphonic metal band records string, brass and choir arrangements that sound integrated into the tracks rather than pasted on top, it is often Miro who wrote them. He has worked in that capacity with Rhapsody of Fire, Kamelot, Epica, Angra, Edguy and many others, alongside producer Sascha Paeth — a decades-long partnership that constitutes the technical infrastructure of much of the genre in Europe. It is an invisible and decisive function. Writing orchestration for metal means solving a concrete problem: orchestra and band occupy overlapping frequency ranges, and the voices must be distributed so that neither cancels the other. It is compositional work, not the programming of timbres — and it is what separates records where the strings sound real from those where they sound like electronic ornament. In Avantasia his presence is structural: Tobias Sammet's rock opera depends on orchestral arrangements sustaining continuous narrative across whole albums, a format that would not work without someone able to think on a symphonic scale.
