Paul Stanley — vocalist, guitarist and co-founder of Kiss — was born in New York in 1952 as Stanley Eisen and is the voice on most of the band's biggest hits. If Gene Simmons built Kiss's dark mythology, Stanley built its songs. Rock and Roll All Nite, Detroit Rock City, I Was Made for Lovin' You and Love Gun came from his pen, and the pattern is recognisable: a simple chorus a whole stadium can sing, over a direct hard rock riff. His character, the Starchild, is the master of ceremonies — the one who talks to the crowd between songs and runs the show. One biographical detail gives that path another dimension: Stanley was born with microtia, a malformation of the right ear that left him deaf on that side. He built an entire career as an arena singer and guitarist hearing with one ear only, with no directional perception of sound. He is on Kiss's whole discography, from 1974 to Monster (2012), across the makeup era, the unmasked 1980s, the classic line-up's 1996 return and the long farewell tour that ended in New York in December 2023. Together with Simmons, he is the only member present through the band's full fifty years.
