Rafael Rosa

Brazil

Rafael Rosa — Brazilian drummer — is part of Sinistra, a band on the national metal scene. Over four decades Brazil developed one of the most consistent metal scenes outside the Europe–United States axis. Sepultura and Krisiun reached international audiences; Angra and Viper established melodic metal as a real possibility in the country; and beneath those names lies an extensive layer of bands keeping activity constant in every region. That layer works without industry support. Rehearsals, recordings, pressing and tours are paid for by the musicians themselves, and the financial return rarely covers the investment. What sustains the activity is the individual decision to continue — which explains why Brazilian metal bands tend to have stable line-ups for long stretches: those who stay, stay out of conviction. Drummers in this context work with repertoire of high technical demand and limited resources, which produces a scene with a standard of execution notably above what its material structure would suggest.
