Scott Phillips — American drummer — is one of Creed's founders and a member of Alter Bridge, two bands that dominated American rock in different periods. Creed sold tens of millions of records in the late 1990s with a heavy, melodic rock format made for radio. It was also one of the critics' favourite targets of the time — but the argument rarely touched the playing: the band had competent musicians performing simple material by choice, not by limitation. Alter Bridge, formed in 2004 by the same Creed instrumentalists with Myles Kennedy on vocals, showed that clearly. The repertoire became heavier, more complex and with real room for arrangement — and Phillips's drumming began performing material that demands metrical and dynamic variation, not merely support. Two decades in each of those bands, with a continuous discography and tours of international scale. It is the path of a drummer who lived through the transition from American radio rock to the arena band with a repertoire of its own.
