Stefan Kaufmann is the drummer of Accept's classic line-up and, later, a guitarist in the band — a change of instrument forced by injury. Born in 1960, he joined as drummer in 1980 and recorded Restless and Wild (1982), Balls to the Wall (1983), Metal Heart (1985) and Russian Roulette (1986), establishing the dry, direct rhythmic foundation that carries the group's classic repertoire. His playing puts weight and constancy above invention, fitting a band built around riffs and collective choruses. A serious back injury eventually made it impossible to continue on drums. Rather than leave music, Kaufmann moved to guitar and returned to Accept in that role between 1996 and 2005, recording Predator (1996). He also worked as producer on several U.D.O. albums, the band of Udo Dirkschneider, sustaining the link with his old bandmate for decades.
