Stu Block — born in Canada in 1977 — was Iced Earth's singer between 2011 and 2021, a longer period than any other singer in the band's history apart from Matt Barlow. He took over at a difficult moment: he was replacing Barlow, whose voice had defined the group's classic albums, and had to cover a repertoire written for a baritone of very particular characteristics. Block solved that by not imitating — he brought a wider range, including a high register and a rasped delivery Barlow did not use, widening the spectrum of what the band could do. He recorded Dystopia (2011), Plagues of Babylon (2014) and Incorruptible (2017), albums on which Iced Earth kept Jon Schaffer's galloping riff format with a voice of a profile distinct from the previous one. He came from Into Eternity, the Canadian progressive metal band in which he practised alternation between clean and guttural singing — a versatility that explains his fit for a repertoire of conceptual tracks with characters and changes of register. He left the group in 2021, when activity ceased after Schaffer's arrest.
