Todd La Torre — born in the United States in 1974 — has been Queensrÿche's singer since 2012, taking the post in one of the hardest transitions a singer can face. He joined right after the litigious departure of Geoff Tate, whose voice had defined the band for thirty years and whose court dispute over the group's name was still under way. La Torre had to perform a repertoire built on a very particular operatic register, before an audience that knew every note of Operation: Mindcrime (1988) — and to do so while the legitimacy of the band itself was being argued in court. He came from Crimson Glory, another American progressive metal band, and his timbre is close enough to Tate's to carry the old repertoire without sounding like imitation. He is also a trained drummer, and recorded the drum parts of The Verdict (2019) in addition to the vocals — an unusual situation, arising from Scott Rockenfield's withdrawal. Under his tenure the band has released four albums and regained stability after two decades of ruptures.
