Tom Hunting — born in the United States in 1965 — is Exodus's founding drummer, present in the band across several periods since 1981. His drumming defines part of what Bay Area thrash would become. On Bonded by Blood (1985) he plays at sustained speed across whole tracks, with short fills and a dry attack — the rhythmic model the Californian scene would adopt as standard, distinct both from British heavy metal's swing and from the rigidity the genre would later develop. He left and returned to the band more than once across four decades, crossing changes of singer, changes of label and long hiatuses. In 2021 he was diagnosed with a carcinoma of the stomach and underwent a total gastrectomy in July of that year. He returned to the stage with Exodus in October, three months after the surgery, and continued treatment in the following years with a favourable prognosis. It is one of the hardest recent returns in that world, and the band addressed each stage of the process publicly.
