Exodus are an American thrash metal band formed in 1979 in Richmond, California, widely regarded as one of the founding forces of the Bay Area thrash scene. Kirk Hammett played on the influential 1982 demo before leaving to join Metallica; his replacement, Gary Holt, became the band's creative anchor and the only musician on every album. With Paul Baloff on vocals, Exodus released Bonded by Blood (1985), one of the most important thrash records ever made. Steve "Zetro" Souza fronted Pleasures of the Flesh (1987), Fabulous Disaster (1989), Impact Is Imminent (1990) and Force of Habit (1992). The band broke up in 1993 and reformed permanently in 2001. Souza returned for Tempo of the Damned (2004), then Rob Dukes took over for four albums. Souza came back for Blood In, Blood Out (2014) and Persona Non Grata (2021). In January 2025 Dukes returned once more. Four decades on, Exodus remain one of thrash metal's most respected and relentlessly active institutions.
