Vinny Appice is the drummer of Dio's classic phase and one of the few musicians who followed Ronnie James Dio across two different bands. Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1957, he is the brother of drummer Carmine Appice. He joined Black Sabbath in 1980, during the Dio era, recording Mob Rules (1981) and the live Live Evil (1982). When Dio left Sabbath, Appice went with him, and the two assembled the new band: he is on Holy Diver (1983), The Last in Line (1984), Sacred Heart (1985) and Dream Evil (1987). His playing is heavy and deliberately simple. Appice does not fill bars with variation or seek prominence — he marks time with weight and leaves room for the voice, which in a repertoire built around Ronnie James Dio is exactly what is called for. It is the opposite of the technical drummer, and that is why it works. He returned to Dio in the 1990s and played with the singer again in Heaven & Hell, the reunion of Black Sabbath's Dio line-up, between 2006 and 2010.
