Timo Kotipelto

Timo Kotipelto has been the voice of Stratovarius since 1994, and the musician who kept the band standing when it lost its own architect. Born in Lappajärvi, Finland, in 1969, he joined to record Fourth Dimension (1995), taking over the microphone Timo Tolkki had been handling alongside the guitar. His tone is clear, high and instantly identifiable — a tenor that sustains long notes without shrillness and carries a slight Finnish accent treated as part of the signature rather than a flaw to be corrected. It is the voice of Episode (1996), Visions (1997), Destiny (1998) and Infinite (2000), the four albums that made Stratovarius a reference point in the genre. Proof of his importance came in the crisis. Between 2004 and 2005 the band nearly fell apart amid internal ruptures, and in 2008 Tolkki left for good — the writer, producer and guitarist who had created all of it. Kotipelto stayed, and Stratovarius went on existing with him as its axis, recording Polaris (2009), Elysium (2011), Nemesis (2013), Eternal (2015) and Survive (2022). Few bands survive the departure of whoever invented them. In parallel he has kept a solo career since Waiting for the Dawn (2002), the project Cain's Offering with Jani Liimatainen, and an acoustic duo with the same partner.
