Aaron Aedy — born in England in 1967 — has been Paradise Lost's rhythm guitarist since 1988, present across the band's entire discography. His function is the support of a sound built on contrast. While Greg Mackintosh plays the slow melodic lines that give the band its identity, Aedy keeps the weight underneath: long chords, low tuning and constant attack, without variation that would compete for attention. In a repertoire of dragging tempos, it is that ground which keeps the songs from sounding empty between one phrase and the next. He crossed every phase of the group, and some demanded very different roles. On Host (1999), when the band replaced guitars with synthesizers, his part practically vanished from the record; on the 2010s albums, with the return to death-doom, he became once again the heaviest element of the arrangement. He is, alongside Nick Holmes, Greg Mackintosh and Steve Edmondson, part of a core that has remained practically unchanged since the founding — a rare situation in bands with more than three decades of activity.
