Alex Skolnick

Alex Skolnick — born in the United States in 1968 — is Testament's lead guitarist, and one of the few metal musicians to build a parallel career of equal weight in another genre. He joined Testament as a teenager and recorded the albums that established the band within Bay Area thrash: The Legacy (1987), The New Order (1988), Practice What You Preach (1989), Souls of Black (1990) and The Ritual (1992). His solos are melodic and built on the harmony — an inheritance of formal study, not of repeated scales — and that is what distinguishes Testament from contemporary bands whose guitarists worked only with speed. He left in 1992 and did something practically nobody in metal did: he studied jazz in depth and formed the Alex Skolnick Trio, a jazz group that reinterprets heavy metal repertoire as standards arrangements. It is not a novelty project — it is work taken seriously in both worlds, and it earned him respect in a circuit that usually ignores metal musicians. He returned to Testament in 2005 and has since combined both careers, recording The Formation of Damnation (2008), Dark Roots of Earth (2012), Titans of Creation (2020) and Para Bellum (2025). He is also part of Trans-Siberian Orchestra, playing that band's symphonic repertoire on large-scale tours.
