Sascha Gerstner has been Helloween's guitarist since 2002, when he took the place left by Roland Grapow — and is the second longest-serving guitarist in the band's history, behind only Michael Weikath. Born in 1977, he came from Freedom Call, and joined at a delicate moment: the dismissal of Grapow and Uli Kusch the year before had split the group's audience. His contribution was to bring a more modern vocabulary into a band whose template had been settled for fifteen years. Gerstner's phrasing is more technical and sharper than his predecessors', with lower tunings and riffs of contemporary weight, audible from Rabbit Don't Come Easy (2003) and above all on Gambling with the Devil (2007) and 7 Sinners (2010), the heaviest records in the catalogue. Proof of his standing came in 2016, when the reunion with Kai Hansen and Michael Kiske turned Helloween into a seven-piece with three guitarists on stage. Gerstner remained a central part of the arrangement, sharing the space with the band's founder and with Weikath himself, and writing material on the albums Helloween (2021) and Giants & Monsters (2025). He also works as a photographer and graphic designer, with visual work both inside and outside the world of metal.
