Ad Sluijter — born in the Netherlands in 1980 — was Epica's guitarist between 2002 and 2008, a member of the founding line-up. His importance lies in what the band was not yet. When Mark Jansen left After Forever and put Epica together, the idea of real orchestra and choir over a metal base still had to be translated into actual records — and Sluijter was the guitarist of that translation, present on The Phantom Agony (2003), Consign to Oblivion (2005) and The Divine Conspiracy (2007), the three albums that established the group internationally. He left the band in 2008 by his own decision, stating that the routine of continuous touring was not compatible with the life he wanted to lead — a reason rarely given that frankly in this field. He was replaced by Isaac Delahaye.
