Adam Duce — born in the United States in 1972 — was Machine Head's founding bassist, a member between 1991 and 2013. His stay of more than two decades covers the band's entire history up to that point: the debut with Burn My Eyes (1994), one of the records that defined groove metal; the detour into nu metal on The Burning Red (1999) and Supercharger (2001); and the recovery with Through the Ashes of Empires (2003) and The Blackening (2007). His function is defined by the group's rhythmic logic. Machine Head builds weight on displacement — mid-tempo riffs, low tuning and accents falling off the expected beat. The bass has to follow those breaks in unison with the guitar, giving body to the attack without filling the spaces that produce the effect. His departure in 2013 was litigious, with a court dispute against Robb Flynn over rights and participation in the band — a rupture that ended the group's longest-lasting line-up.
