Jack Gibson has been Exodus's bassist since 1997, which makes him the second longest-serving member of the band, behind only Gary Holt. He joined in the hardest period of the group's history — Exodus had been dissolved since 1993 and would only return to regular activity in the 2000s — and stayed through every phase that followed: the return with Tempo of the Damned (2004), the albums with Rob Dukes on vocals, Steve Souza's return and the most recent output. His function in Bay Area thrash is specific and demanding. In that subgenre the bass follows the guitar riffs in unison, at the same speed and with the same picking articulation — there are no independent lines and no room for phrasing of one's own. It is work of physical endurance as much as of precision: holding for an hour of show the same pattern two guitarists play with a pick. He is present across the band's entire modern discography, from Tempo of the Damned to Persona Non Grata (2021).
