Michael LePond has been Symphony X's bassist since 1998, debuting on V: The New Mythology Suite (2000). Born in 1966, he replaced Thomas Miller and has remained ever since, forming with Michael Romeo, Michael Pinnella, Russell Allen and Jason Rullo the longest-lasting line-up in the band's history. His work is supportive in a particularly difficult context. Symphony X builds its tracks on counterpoint between guitar and keyboard, with frequent metric changes and unison passages demanding identical execution from three instruments at once. LePond follows those lines note for note when he has to and holds the harmonic floor when he does not — a decision that shifts with every section and requires constant reading of the structure. His tone is full and firm in attack, with picking that sustains speed without losing definition in the low register, a quality audible above all on the group's heaviest records, Iconoclast (2011) and Underworld (2015). Outside the band he keeps the project Michael LePond's Silent Assassins, where he takes on the writing and explores a heavy metal more direct than Symphony X's.
