Greg Christian — born in the United States in 1966 — was the bassist of Testament's classic line-up, across two periods. He was in the band from the founding and recorded the five albums that established it in Bay Area thrash: The Legacy (1987), The New Order (1988), Practice What You Preach (1989), Souls of Black (1990) and The Ritual (1992). He left in the same period when Alex Skolnick and Louie Clemente also departed, and returned in the 2000s, taking part in The Formation of Damnation (2008) and Dark Roots of Earth (2012) — the band's phase of return after Chuck Billy's recovery. His function in thrash is more exposed than in other genres. The classic Bay Area format works with galloping guitar riffs and fast double kick, and the bass has to follow those figures in unison, with clean articulation and no lag — a considerable technical demand at high tempos, and immediately audible when it fails. His two spells cover Testament's two best-known phases: the original 1980s line-up and the partial reconstitution that returned the band to the international circuit two decades later.
