Anders Fridén — born in Sweden in 1973 — has been In Flames's singer since 1995, and is the voice of practically the entire discography that made the band known. His arrival has a detail that reveals how the Gothenburg scene worked: before In Flames, Fridén had sung in Dark Tranquillity, the neighbouring band that, alongside At the Gates, formed the triangle that created melodic death metal. The three groups traded musicians and shared an audience in the same Swedish city, and it is from that closeness that the subgenre was born. He debuted on The Jester Race (1996) with a mid-range guttural vocal, articulated enough that the guitar melodies were not buried. Through the 2000s he began alternating that growl with clean singing, a change that accompanied the band's turn towards a more accessible sound from Reroute to Remain (2002) — a direction that deeply divided the older audience. He is, alongside Björn Gelotte, responsible for the group's continuity after Jesper Strömblad's departure in 2010, and has led In Flames ever since.
